Alice J Lee 이정연 is a second-generation Korean American designer, researcher, and educator. She researches alphabetic systems, concepts of interconnectedness, and the impacts of cultural imperialism, and her practice engages interdisciplinary strategies to explore the dynamics of opposing technologies, formats, and ideas. She has exhibited bodies of multi-media work and interactive installations at Auburn University, the Franklin in Chicago, Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, and other galleries, and presented her creative work and research on the Korean Alphabet and its social and cultural implications at international conferences, including TypeCon and CAA (the College Art Association), and other venues that include the Sejong Institute, Notre Dame University, and the University of Houston. Additionally, her practice includes facilitating workshops, engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations, graphic design project commissions, and developing and sustaining an independent publishing imprint, Dual Press, with a mission to amplify underrepresented voices. She is an associate professor of communication design at Texas State University in San Marcos, teaching critical making, motion, and typography courses in the MFA and BFA programs. She received her BA from Yale University and her Master’s in Design from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
